Scouts, Scouters & Parents,
During our last meeting, we elected our next Senior Patrol and Patrol Leaders who will be officially installed at COH. They will assume their new duties on 10-06-15. I am very proud of how the boys handled the election and how the nominees presented themselves. Before I get to the results I want to share a couple of important points. Scouting is intended for the Troop to be “boy led.” I think this really equates to “boy led” and adult facilitated. My job, as well as the other adult leaders, is to teach, guide, prod and encourage the boys to take on these leadership roles and manage the problems and challenges associated. This involves recognizing priorities and setting goals and objectives. We as parents and leaders must keep this in mind as the troop exists because of the boys, and always remember this is their troop.
A quick recap of how we handled the elections is in order. First, I had the boys list what they felt were the most important qualities of their leadership. We also discussed the minimum participation requirements, as it is no secret that many of our Scouts have other interests and obligations. The Scouts decided as a troop that each person elected as SPL, ASPL and PL’s will maintain 2/3’s participation at all meetings, camping trips and day hikes or they can be removed from that leadership role and placed in a different role not involving Senior Patrol or Patrol Leader positions. Qualities the Scouts wanted in their leadership included:
- Communication (making sure the message gets out)
- Integrity
- Follow-thru
- Knowledge, skills and abilities (it’s hard to teach something you don’t know)
- Loyalty (If you are in leadership, you need to be there!)
- Scout Law
We then opened up the floor and the Scouts were able to nominate Star rank and higher for Senior Patrol, and First Class and higher for Patrol Leader. Each nominee, if accepted, gave a 60-second speech as to why they should be elected. The nominees were then posed questions by members of the troop that they each had to answer. I give a huge amount of credit to all the Scouts as the questions were direct, but thoughtful, and reflected a genuine sense of concern about maintaining a healthy troop. Each nominee obviously answered the question(s) honestly and openly. It is yet another reflection of their camaraderie and mutual respect for each other. It was a great process to watch, and again I am very proud of all the Scouts.
I would like to congratulate our new Senior Patrol and Patrol Leaders!
SENIOR PATROL
- Ryan B.- Senior Patrol Leader
- Christian S. – Asst. Senior Patrol Leader
- Matthew P. – Asst. Senior Patrol Leader
- Ishaan C. – Asst. Senior Patrol Leader
PATROL LEADERS
- Tyler M.
- Samuel P.
- Adam P.
- Colin S.
In the next couple of weeks we will be shuffling the patrols around to balance out age and experience. All remaining First Class and higher Scouts will receive or continue in a position of leadership.
I also want to congratulate Carlos G. and Adam B. as they will both become Junior Assistant Scoutmasters in the next couple of weeks. They have both been very active in the troop and I have relied on them heavily for the past couple of years.
We will have a Patrol Leader Council on 10-06-15 at 615 PM to start planning and organizing for the months of October and November.
One last note, next Tuesday is your last chance to have a Scoutmaster Conference so you (the Scout) need to call me after you check with Mr. Suematsu to confirm your eligibility.
In closing, WE ARE TROOP 486, and our last meeting is another reason why!
Warm regards,
Mr. Burnside

The first big troop outing of this Scouting year is fast approaching. Keller Peak is one of only two rock-climbing outings we have throughout the year. If you like to climb, then you don’t want to miss this one.
At this past Tuesday night’s troop meeting the Scouts had an opportunity to indicate if they wanted to go on this outing. Those that did were divided into patrols and they began to plan their meals.
The Scouts who expressed interest are:
- Jayden K.
- Nathaniel L.
- Tyler M.
- Chris G.
- Nick C.
- Samuel P.
- Adam P.
- Colin S.
- Colin J.
- Ethan J.
- Andrew G.
- Adam B.
- Carlos G.
- Shawn A.
Next Tuesday, September 29, will be the final day to sign up for the trip. During this meeting menus will be finalized, we will discuss what the Scouts should bring (e.g. camping gear, clothes, etc.), and the Troop gear will be inspected to ensure it is in good working order and ready to go. The Scouts will shop for groceries on the days leading up to our departure on Friday, October 2.
If you are one of the Scouts going, you must remember to bring $25 to next Tuesday’s troop meeting to pay for your meals. Additionally, you must also bring the following forms completed:
We will meet at the church this Friday, Oct. 2, at 5pm to check gear, food and resolve any last minute issues. We plan on leaving the church around 6pm. There are 4 parents who have signed up to drive the Scouts to the campsite. A few more parents will show up late or on Saturday morning.
If you have any questions or concerns about this outing, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Migallos, Mr. Lopes or Mr. Krosevic.

Your next Court of Honor is coming up fast (October 13th)! Have you scheduled your Scoutmaster conference yet? Next Tuesday, September 29th, is the last Troop meeting before COH, so if you are ready, be sure to call Mr. Burnside and make it happen. If you’ve earned it, get it done.
Welcome all Scouts and Scouting Families to the Scouts Only portion of your troop website. This is a place just for you.
In the coming weeks and months we will be filling these pages with valuable information, such as outing details, meeting agendas, Scout expectations, patrol rosters, and many other things related to your life in the troop.
Feel free to talk to me if you have any questions about the Troop 486 website, or if you have an idea for a post that you would like to share with the rest of the troop.

Welcome SPL’s to the SPL Only portion of your troop website. This portion of your site is password protected so the Scoutmaster and other Senior Patrol Leaders can post or display information that is not for the rest of the troop’s (or parent’s) eyes. As you can see, the intent of these pages is to have a central location where information can be exchanged or communicated among the senior leadership of Troop 486.
In the coming weeks and months you will be filling these pages with valuable information, such as outing details, meeting agendas, action lists (to-do’s), leadership expectations, troop rosters, and many other things related to your life as a leader in the troop.

Boy Scout Troop 486 offers a year-round adventure-based program designed to develop and encourage effective character, citizenship, and fitness training for boys age 11-17.
In addition to camping, Scouts and adult leaders enjoy activities such as rock-climbing and rappelling, backpacking, mountain biking, canoeing, target-shooting, day hikes, and more while accommodating the needs of today’s busy families.
Troop meetings are held every Tuesday Evening at 7:15pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 555 E. Mountain View Ave., Glendora, California.
A letter from our Scoutmaster
Our troop was founded on May 5th, 1955 and is sponsored by Grace Episcopal Church. Since the Troop was chartered we have had 60 Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle. Our Eagle projects have helped local communities, schools, churches, and charities.
Throughout the year our scouts have participated in white-water rafting down the Colorado River, rock-climbing and rappelling in Joshua Tree National Park, week-long camps in Kings Canyon and mountain biking in Moab, Utah. Every year we try to squeeze in backpacking, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, rock-climbing, wilderness survival camping, outdoor cooking competitions, rifle and shotgun shooting events, and orienteering.
Merit badges are awards earned by youth members of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), based on activities within an area of study by completing a list of periodically updated requirements. The purpose of the merit badge program is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or a vocation.
This weekends day hike will be fairly easy so new Scouts can be introduced to hikes in our local mountains. We encourage all new scouts, and seasoned veterans, to join us on this great outing. We will talk a little about proper hiking gear, hydration, and you may learn a little about the local plants and animals. If you plan on joining us, please start hydrating yourself (e.g. drink plenty of water) on Thursday and Friday.
